“Why Penn” Essay, In YouTube Form
As the incoming freshmen anxiously await their housing assignments, us upperclassmen are feeling a bit nostalgic. We’ve reported on the Penn YouTube channel before, but we came across this video just recently. Maybe we’re huge nerds at UTB, but this clip gives us goosebumps (well, up until the five minute mark, when it becomes a fundraising plea). The shots of the Quad! And College Hall! And all the smart people! And the music! You’re killing us, Amy.

“we” upperclassmen, not “us” upperclassmen.
Peek a Chu, I respectively disagree. While it may be old school proper to use “we”, “us” is a colloquial variant that is used quite a bit.
Julia, it may be a “colloquial variant used quite a bit,” but it is also grammatically wrong.
Upperclassmen in that sentence functions as the subject, no? Then the pronoun that you use must agree with it. Would you ever say, “…us are feeling a bit nostalgic?” Maybe you would, but my guess is probably not.
Now if you acknowledge that the usage is incorrect, but CHOOSE to use the objective form in order to achieve a particular colloquial rhetorical effect, then I can most definitely get behind that.
But a word’s/construction’s place as a “colloquial varia[tion],” even if used frequently, does not, ipso facto, make it correct. Just because some people use it don’t make it right.
But, in all fairness, I very much enjoyed the post.
Even if it’s used colloquially, the proper format is “we” not “us,” because its an appositive. “We ___ are going to the store,” as opposed to “Us __ are going to the store.”
Adding to the grammar critique, you are a dumb f_ck. It should be respectfully disagree, not respectively disagree.
P.S. We got dicks like Jesus (Mickey Avalon-My Dick)
Oh, the grammar rage! Our AP English teacher is totally loving this right now.
You caught us (not we!). UTB likes to discuss “dolla dolla billz” and our “fave” weird medical videos and all sorts of incorrectly phrased stuff. So yes, Grammar Nazi, at times we’re into the whole rhetorical effect thang. And we’re glad you liked the post!
As for you, Po-Town Jew, you misunderstood us. We don’t respectfully disagree. We respectively disagree. As in, we stated our opinion in respect to your buddy Peek a Chu’s opinion that we should have used “we”.
P.S. I got flows for hos with low self-esteem. (Mickey Avalon – Dipped in Vaseline)
“we” upperclassmen, not “us” upperclassmen.
Julia Rebecca Rubin, you are not only the newest American Girl’s namesake but also the bomb dot com.
Grammar freaks, that ‘not only … but also …’ bit was for you.
“Respectively disagree” is not a real phrase, and us is an awkward colloquialism.
