Where To Grab Some (New) Grub This Fall

Penn students take their food oh-so-seriously. As such, we’ve compiled a list (and made a fancy schmancy map!) of the new additions to West Philly’s culinary delights. Check out the breakdown after the jump.

The Blockley Pourhouse
Open now; 3801 Chestnut
This gastropub occupies a formal mental institution and countsĀ poutine among its offerings. A decent beer list, everyday drink specials and snack-y menu make it a contender for the Blarney crowd.

The Cantina at Distrito
Scheduled to open Monday; 3945 Chestnut
Distrito is transforming its first floor into a much-anticipated student-friendly Cantina, complete with cocktails that max out at $6 and a reduced-price food menu.

Capogiro Gelateria
Open now; 3925 Walnut (The Radian)
The West Philly outpost of everyone’s favorite gelato place serves up incredible flavors like Rosemary Honey Goat Milk and Cannella con Caramello. Sandwiches, coffee and cocktails are also available.

D.P. Dough Philly
Scheduled to open the week of 9/7; 33 S. 40th
Branded as “the pizza alternative,” this newcomer at 40th and Ludlow has over 40 different kinds of calzones on its menu… and if you can’t find one you like, you can create your own.

Insomnia Cookies
Scheduled to open Monday; 3417 Spruce (Houston Hall)
The perennial late night fave that originated at Penn is opening up a bricks and mortar shop in the basement of Houston. Expect cookies, brownies and milk to round out the menu.

Sprinkles Frozen Yogurt
Scheduled to open in mid-September; 3606 Chestnut
Penn’s love affair with fro-yo continues, this time in the form of a self-serve spot with tons of flavors (Original Tart! Root Beer! Bubble Gum!) and toppings (Gummy Bears! Pomegranate! Coco Pebbles!).

Taglio
Scheduled to open 9/9; 3716 Spruce
From the folks that brought you Gia, this ItalianĀ pizzeria will specialize in deck-oven pizzas with focaccia-like crust and high-quality toppings that are cut and sold by weight.

Tampopo Japanese Restaurant
Open now; 267 S. 44th

The area’s newest sushi haunt is located a bit west of campus, but offers great lunch specials and is BYOB (where “B” stands for both booze and bowl).

Tap House
Scheduled to open nowhere in the near future; 3925 Walnut (The Radian)
We were promised firepits and 75 beers on tap by August 1st, but construction has been stalled for weeks and a call to Public House Investments yielded few details about the indoor/outdoor space.
