A Billionaire Brawl

So, basketball didn’t work out this year, but Penn beat Princeton where it hurts: the money game. According to, Penn has more billionaires on Forbes list of the world’s 1,000+ billionaires. With at least 25 billion-izz-aires with ties to Penn, the Quakers handily top the Tiger’s nine. The list includes some notables: the world’s 3rd richest man (Warren Buffett), a Quadrangle namesake (Ronald Perelman), and a casino mogul (Steve Wynn). The list also includes some not-so-notables, including supermarket heir Charles Butt. Mr. Butt, we’re glad you fell into foodstuff fortune, because we’re not sure if success was otherwise playing in your favor.

The absurd wealth of Penn alumni stands in stark contrast to Penn’s penury relative to its Ivy League peers (especially Princeton). Penn needs to find a way to incentivize these billionaires to give more money to Penn. $100 million to SAS from Steve Wynn would be transformative.

steve wynn is taking over the foxwoods casino project (after they dropped the ball for the thousandth time), and has openly stated intentions that the casino (on the south philly waterfront) will get most of its business not from rich out of towners, but instead by attracting (read: preying on) local jews, italians, and vietnamese, because we all know they love to gamble! also, he's just kind of a dick.

I don’t care if he’s a dick. I’d take anyone’s money (within reason…not Madoff for example)if it meant that Penn would have better resources to increase financial aid, support the local community, build great new facilities, and hire great faculty.
