Penn Student Sues JetBlue For Racial Profiling

According to this article in IndiaWest, College student and Penn Masala singer Ram Narayan is suing JetBlue Airlines after he was erroneously embarrassed and escorted off a plane from New York to Portland last summer—a mistake, which he claims, was based solely on his skin color.

Narayan is being represented in this suit by well-known lawyer, Brandon Mayfield, who became somewhat of a household name when he himself was mistakenly linked by the FBI to the 2004 train bombings in Madrid. The United States has since issued a formal apology and $2 million settlement to Mayfield, and has deemed parts of the PATRIOT Act unconstitutional.

Tsk tsk, JetBlue. We love extra legroom as much as the next guy, but why you gotta be so heartless?

Wow, can you say money monger? Here’s what most likely actually happened.

Jetblue made a mistake and kicked this kid off the plane. He made nothing of it, and went along with his life. Brandon Mayfield is a smart lawyer who knows how to make a lot of money, given his experience with past cases. Mayfield must have looked up some kind of list of plane errors in search of suable cases, or maybe was contacted by the other passenger or maybe even by Ram Narayan and managed to find something that he could spin into something racial worth a lotta money. 8-9 months later, Mayfield reaches out to Ram Narayan saying “hey I found a pretty good case that I think you and me can make a lotta money off of” and Ram Narayan goes for it. This kid sounds awesome.

Ram, I’m sure there are easier ways to scam people out of their money.

Instead of jumping to arrogant and insensitive conclusions, you should wait for the case to play out. The attitudes outlined in these comments are exactly why thousands of cases of race and sex based injustices are unreported and unaddressed. No one really wants to go through a law suit, especially a student who has to deal with many more important things. The whole reason why these cases are brought to court and heard in the first place is because there exists at least some legitimacy to grievances against racial profiling and actions committed under the domains of the patriot act. Try to be sensitive and avoid passing unwarranted judgments. Or don’t and be that cool kid who rips on people via article comment postings…please enlighten us!

I’ve known this guy for several years. If he’s reading this he will know who it is.

TheTruth is wrong, Jetblue kicked him off the plane and didn’t even give him a voucher OR pay for lodging. He had to pay for an extra ticket from Southwest.

He also had to sleep in the airport.

This suit is fully justified, what the company did was disgusting.
