New Names for Penn

Maybe you’ve heard that there’s a mass movement couple of people circulating a petition to change Penn’s name in light of the Penn State scandal and, we guess, our general feeling of inferiority from such a plain name. But you probably haven’t heard the naming alternatives being whispered in only the most powerful of circles. Here’s our exclusive scoop on the shortlist of Penns that could be (yeah, we absolutely made these up).

  • Huntsman University
  • University City University
  • THEOP: The Old Penn
  • #notpennstate University
  • Harvard
  • As one commenter wrote, “PENNterest. If it’s gonna be mistaken anyway, side with 2,000% growth! ” (But seriously, when is our Pinterest invite gonna come through)
  • The “Jewniversity of Pennsylgaysia!” Have you guys heard that one???

If you have any of your own suggestions, do share.

More On Arrests This Week— The DP today has updates on both the alleged Commons armed robber (it was an ex-Bon Appetit employee!) and the students who were arrested (find out the four!) for Occupying downtown.

All Fall 2012 College Classes That Double Count

Here is a list of anything and everything in the College you can double-count for a Foundational Approach and Sector requirement for next semester. We know, right?! A huge thanks goes out to the Penn STEP club for originally tweeting this, and the mysterious “Pavel” associated with PennApps who produced this report. Sorry about the formatting: the raw data can be found here.

We're looking for a new class of baby writers!

It’s almost time for spring OCR, and we didn’t want to be left out of all the hiring fun. In fact, we wanted to start the fun early! Forget Goldman or Mckinsey, your resumes need to only flock to one place— here. Except, instead of your resumes, we want nothing but you and your ideas. Put your best bloodthirsty face on (but please, leave the business attire at home) and make your way down to 4015 Walnut tomorrow evening. You can either come at 7:15 p.m. for the event or get there early for the Street Writer’s meeting at 6:30. If you have any questions in the meantime, send ‘em to contact[at]underthebutton.com. We hope to see you there!

Occupy Penn Email Says Students Were Arrested In Last Night’s Eviction

Photo from the DP.

As you may know, police downtown emptied out Occupy Philly last night night per Mayor Nutter’s orders to begin a long-planned construction project. This did not go particularly smoothly. In an email to members, Occupy Penn says that several Penn students and Penn professor Toorjo Ghose were apparently arrested last night. We’re trying to find and confirm details: if you have any information, let us know.

We’ve been told that in light of the evictions, OccupyPhilly is coming to rally at the Button at noon. Read the full email from Occupy Penn after the jump.

Amy Opined In The New York Times

Amy’s back in action today, proving that being a college president is not only about throwing parties and nomming gelato, but also being really smart. In an opinion collaboration with Dennis Thompson of Harvard (he’s the Kanye to her Jay-Z), she discusses the lack of compromise in Congress. While that’s a lofty topic (really, we’ll be sure to check out the forthcoming book), we can’t help but feel a little disappointed. In the spirit of protecting our fair institution, we think Amy should’ve held her op-ed hostage until a certain other opinion writer apologized for almost destroying Penn’s reputation.

A College Freshman Has Died Of Cancer— We're extremely saddened to hear that 19-year-old Annie Zhu died yesterday of osteosarcoma, a type of cancer. The DP has more details here.

Coursekit Launches For Real Today

Coursekit, the start-up media darling founded by three Penn students, officially goes legit today. Want to try it out? The current advertised way is to nag your professors so they’ll adopt it for next semester (unless you’re a professor yourself, in which case you can sign up the service for your class).

However, we did a little Gonooping (we made that word up, it’s google+snooping) and found a public class on Coroporate Valuation offered at NYU by Aswath Damodaran. You can check out everything about how a class actually functions on the site at the public course page here. If that kind of stuff interests you and you want to actually enroll for the remainder of the semester (you can’t get NYU credit, sorry), use the code FHGN2P. Then you can annoy your Penn professors to join. Check out their into video after the jump!

Timely Alert About A Dangerous Situation: Robbery On Chestnut

There was an armed robbery at 41st and Chestnut, which obviously sucks, but at least DPS contacted everyone this time. According to the alert (which you should have now received via email and text): “Robbery by gun, 41 Chestnut, white male, 20’s, black hat & olive military coat, suspicious persons call 215-573-3333.” Though that’s a little far up, it’s still definitely in campus range; if you’re feeling unsafe, remember you can always call 898-WALK for an escort home.

Let us know if you saw anything and keep checking back for more info.

Update: the robbery happened at New Style Pizza. The DP has many more details here.
