Look around you: 2012 is here! Guys, it’s here! And while we’re all celebrating the coming of a new year and all the neat scrapbooks we’ll make in the coming months, it is once again the time to reflect on the passing of 2011 and those campus classics that went with it:
Philly Diner
Deceased: October
Cause of Death: Unclear. We smell a conspiracy afoot.
Survived By: Nothing as of yet
In Memoriam: That wailing sound still ringing in your ears is the collective shriek of the SDT sisters who lost their fave drunchie hangout right outside their chapter house. We totally sniffed out PhiDi’s decline over a year ago, but the surprise of its overnight death still cuts deep.

In a sad turn of events for Spruce dwelling crack caffeine addicts, it appears that coffee shop Cream & Sugar has closed down (quite contrary to the “We’ll Be Returning In November!” assurance on their website). The prime real estate on 40th and Spruce is available for any business looking to cozy up between Nara and University Pinball as a nice intermediary between sake and Skee-Ball, meaning it’s gotta be something classy. Stay tuned for updates!
We’ve all been there, waking up on a lazy Sunday, surfing through a few channels before deciding on what we really want: a cupcake-decorating party for six to eight people in the comfort of our own home. And what better establishment to provide a mobile baking experience than campus favorite Cream and Sugar? We don’t see anything wrong with the $100-for-$200 price tag on this one-of-a-kind experience. Finally there’s a Groupon to fulfill this overwhelming consumer demand. Hurry, there’s only a day and a half left to buy!

Cream and Sugar, that place that puts Eggo waffles in a toaster, decided to diversify its “Disney On Ice” costume portfolio to attract all the lil’ kiddies in town. Translation: Spongebob, Dora and Nemo came for a visit with a bouncy castle in tow! Because baked goods and cartoons go together (right?). Muppets, candy, Disney, cupcakes, moonbounces– Yep, all signs point to Cream and Sugar being managed by iCarly.
Update: Whoops! Turns out this was all part of University Family Fun Center’s party! Still, why all the NickToons and Disney characters?

Cream and Sugar’s newest business strategy? Cupcake decorating classes! We imagine they’ll cover all the basics: the Frosting Method, Martha Stewart’s Fundamental Theorem of Fondant Application, the Rainbow Sprinkle Postulate and much, much more. Sign up soon, though, because we imagine space is very limited! Yum-O!

And this time they brought friends! According to our sources, Cookie Monster was joined by such animated stars as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, all of whom were shaking their groove things to the musical stylings of Bubba Sparx. How else would they promote Cream & Sugar? Because yes, that is what they were doing. More photos after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yep, ’tis the season of baking cookies, seeing old friends and getting drunk with your family. Contrary to popular belief, though, the holidays aren’t meant for merriment; rather, they are a solemn time to sit there and think about what you did wrong this past year and to make New Year’s resolutions you will (probably not) follow.
But we’re here to help, and to do so, we’re posting some of the most inspiring resolutions we’ve heard of (okay, completely made up) from friends, readers and an assortment of other gentle people who tickle our fancy. So, without further ado:
“Do full, thorough examinations of every bag and backpack that passes out of Van Pelt… sike!” –Van Pelt bag-checkers

Cream and Sugar, you’ve outdone yourself. The infrequently patronized candy-and-bagels joint has evidently decided to branch out into store bought frozen fare. Hooray. This way, you can pay (what we’re guessing is) some absurd markup for the minor convenience of using someone else’s toaster.
Oh, hello – I didn’t see you there,
DP crime log. Why so modest? Sure, you were a little shorter than usual (good job staying legal, everyone), but you were totally on top of your game nonetheless! Here, let’s take a peek at some of the glitteriest gems from your chronicle of law gone wrong.
File under “Shocking,” “Appalling,” and “Lies! All Lies!”: there was an attempted break in at Cream and Sugar! At around 3:15 am on October 14th, an unknown suspect reportedly attempted to gain entry to West Philadelphia’s most legitimate bakery, which is run by legitimate business people and turns a legitimate profit by entirely legitimate means. What would one even steal from a bakery so pure of heart?
There’s a little more after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

A tipster sent us a photo of this sign outside Cream & Sugar, which closed early today “due to a recent invasion of MUPPETS!” Oh right, just a routine invasion of muppets.
A muppet invasion, of course, raises a number of questions! Does one call a muppet exterminator? Is there a muppet problem in West Philadelphia? Has anyone else ever realized that Cream and Sugar is really just a bake sale disguised as a store?
Okay, but all jokes and questions aside (and we won’t even bother picking on the strange grammar)…WHAT THE HELL?!
