Philly Beer Week is back with a vengeance. Last year we provided a roundup of everything happening in our backyard, but this time PBW took the lead and made you a schedule that can be found here.
We still definitely encourage getting into downtown proper (or beyond!) for some of the better events. After all, Sips isn’t for 6 days; there’s a whole lot of brew to consume until then.
After the jump, a sampling of things you simply must do for the week. And by must do, we either mean they genuinely look awesome, or they sound absolutely absurd. You decide which is which.

Philadelphia summer can finally begin: today marks the triumphant return of Center City Sips! Every Wednesday through August 31, 83 bars will be offering $4 cocktails, $3 wines, $2 beers, and half-priced appetizers from 5-7 P.M., and some will offer 15% discounts for diners staying past 7 P.M. In celebration of the Center City District’s 20th birthday (happy birthday! — wait, huh?), a different bar every Wednesday will be giving away prizes (find out which ones by following the Center City Sips Twitter). Discounted booze! Free stuff! Things just keep getting better. So whether you’re working the 9-5 grind downtown or simply looking to add some spice to your hump day, take advantage of this awesome deal to explore new hotspots and become a connoisseur of the city’s swankiest watering holes.
Stay tuned each week for our own suggestions on how to make the most of your Sipsperience!
Because booze is always news here at UTB, we are happy to share this week’s drinkable delight: it’s Cocktails Week! The friendly people at Yelp Philadelphia have partnered with the 21 bars and restaurants they are most excited about to feature major drink specials through Sunday, April 10. Each place will highlight one of their drinks for 50% off; all you have to do is ask for the Yelp Cocktail Week price.
We’ve mapped out all of the locations below, and you can see the entire list of participants and drinks after the jump. Happy imbibing!

If you’re in the mood to pretend you know a lot about beer, this weekend’s “Pop-Up Brewery” at Tap House is just the place to put those refined (or not) taste buds to use. Sixpoint Craft Ales will be showing off a bunch of their best beers in the first of a series of microbrew events.
The festivities begin tonight, where you can spend $10 for a limited edition beer glass which can be filled twice from any of the taps, and they end on Sunday with a home-brewing class at 1pm and $4 beer specials. In between, our guess is that there will be a lot of beer.
Drinker’s is throwing a back to school bash tonight! As per their lovely flyer, the theme of the night will be primarily educational, as an introductory level course in Partying. In addition to some neat drink specials from 8-11pm, there will also be all sorts of fun and educational activities, like the Naughty School Girl contest, Twister, PBR duels and more! Because what says “back to school” like badly behaved girls doing the limbo and spinning around baseball bats…?
This event goes from 8pm-12am, and the drink specials are as follows: $5.50 Bud Light pitchers until 10pm, $3 Jello shots, Jack drinks, and Three Olive drinks from 9-11pm, and $2 Jungle Juice from 9-11pm.
Our relationship with Penn’s newest watering hole, The Blockley Pourhouse, has been rocky, at best, from the get-go. At first we were totally excited! Excited in that about-to-go-see-a-horror-movie-that-will-haunt-your-dreams-forever type way, but excited, nonetheless. Then, upon checking the ex-asylum, ex-almshouse out, we were unpleasantly surprised.
The roller-coaster ride of emotions that is The Blockley continues, as we enter a state of confusion and mild dismay. FooBooz reports:
During all Penn State games (first game is September 5th vs the Akron Zips) the Blockley will offer all you can eat wings, corn dogs, fries and onion rings for $10. There are also some beer deals but they don’t come up to the minimum quality requirements to be mentioned on Foobooz.
At first we thought that this was a UPenn/Penn State mix-up, but we were mistaken. Turns out the owners (or could it be the ghosts of Blockley residents of yore?) are just Nittany Lion fans! Sure, we care about Penn football these days, and yes, we are perturbed by the decision to root for Penn State football on UPenn’s campus, but we aren’t going to let something as silly as school spirit or Quaker loyalty get in the way of a good old fashioned drink special and a plate of free food, are we? Just make sure to leave the “Not Penn State” apparel at home. Maybe permanently?
