With spring break comes spring fashion! There’s nothing like the feeling of strutting down Locust, latte in hand, rocking some classic ballet flats on a warm March day. Many a Penn betch can be seen wearing the designs of our most fashionable alum, Tory Burch.
Before she became a fashion icon, Tory graduated in ’88 with a major in Art History. Too bad The Walk wasn’t around when Tory was here, because she probably would have owned it. This theta alum went on to become an accomplished fashion designer, business woman, and philanthropist.
Known for her preppy/boho style, Tory’s fashion line is carried at over 1,000 department stores. She’s dated celebs (Lance Armstrong!), made appearances on ANTM and Gossip Girl, and even been endorsed by Oprah! Needless to say, she oozes fabulosity. And like a true Penn do-gooder, Tory has given back with her charity foundation, which provides economic opportunities to women and their families. Alas, yet another ridiculously successful Penn alum who makes us wonder if we will ever do anything half as cool with our lives.
All you fashionistas-in-training, get ready for Philly Fashion Week. Running today through Saturday, the show will include ready-to-wear looks, haute couture, and some badass peacock feathers.
The show kicks off tonight with an Accessories Party, but if you’re looking for staples of the Penn closet, you might be disappointed. (We know, we are too.)
If Philadelphia couture isn’t really your thing, don’t sweat it. It’s always fun to stay home and play dress-up, Liz Lemon style.
While Philadelphia fashion may be known for its vintage eclecticism, Penn’s campus retail has always been a little more salmon shortsy. Until now! Racked Philly reports that Greene Street Consignment is headed to 3734 Spruce Street and will be opening in late February. Greene Street, which already has eight Philly-area locations, has a focus on high-quality and high-end secondhand threads, meaning you may still have to head to Buffalo Exchange for anything on a student budget.
On a sadder note, it’s tata to Dolbey’s Bookstore. It’s always sad to see a small business go, even if it’s being replaced by another, larger, small business.

In his post today on HuffPo (that’s one for the resume!), the Wharton student openly calls for more Huntsman Hipsters (see right) in the form of a Penn fashion department. He doesn’t quite ignore the University’s current offerings, but his plea may actually work–the petition has generated over a hundred signatures!

Short answer: probably not. Actually, most definitely not. On the one hand, yes, we do have The Walk, but we’re not sure that entitles us to a place within the top ten of Stylitics‘ “Most Stylish Campus in America” campaign. Really, do Longchamp totes and Tory Burch flats classify as stylish any longer? Did they ever?
But as with most internet competitions these days, there’s some sort of weird social media catch to Stylitics‘ rankings. See, with this one, the only way to gain a spot on the leaderboard is to accumulate points by making a profile on the website to gain followers and to share on Facebook and Twitter. Essentially, Penn’s #8 ranking can be chalked up to the number of people who are using the site, which would similarly explain why WVU is beating the Fashion Institute of Technology by 17 places. Fancy that! All things considered, Stylitics, sashay…away.
Here is your impressive and inspiring story of the day: Nursing junior Yali Derman was named one of the Top 10 College Women in 2012 by Glamour magazine (for reference, there are a lot of women in college!).
Yali began making handbags when she was 10, out of bandanas given to her by nurses at the hospital where she was being treated for leukemia. Now she’s donated the $150,000 she earned from selling the totes seen at right to support an arts facility at the hospital that treated her 11 years ago. Straight up baller. Congrats!
Look at Amy Gutmann, Madame la Présidente, straight stompin’ with some dudes and Scottish drummers down Locust! This Urban Outfitters catalogue moment was probably brought to you by Sonia Sotomayor’s visit to campus earlier today, and we’re really digging it. Spring has sprung, the sun is out, the sky is blue, the weather is easy, breezy, beautiful, and that means one thing: ’tis the season to see and be seen chillin’ in the relevant outdoor spot of your choice. Remember what we said about the Quakers being in the clear? Well…just kidding. In a scandalous (but FASHIONABLE) plot twist, turns out Penn’s now in a fight with Louis Vuitton. The fashion house’s Director of Civil Enforcement for North America (really though?) is in a haut-couture rage over Penn Law’s take on the logo they’re using for their Fashion Law and Copyright Symposium this month.
Surprise! The fashionistas at Louis V are being dramatic, claiming that the university’s appropriation of their signature is a “dilution” of their trademark, as the Awl reports. Insert lots of snappy legal jargon here.
