Remember how a few weeks ago we were like, “OMG Gang Gang Dance and Madlib are coming to the field between Rodin and Hillel at 9 and playing for free for PennCard holders?” Well that night is tonight! SPEC Jazz and Grooves has also just announced the set times:
9:00- DJ Bruce
11:00 Gang Gang Dance
But wait! SPEC will be selling $3 tickets to its next show, WQHS will make an appearance, Hillel will be holding their pancake breakfast, Red Bull Girls will be handing out Red Bulls (…?), and the Interactive Media Group will be hosting a MeepMe event (…!). Additionally, Amy will be doing headstands and Ashley Hebert will be giving free dental check-ups and handing out roses. (Totally joking about those last two things but could you imagine?)
Some weird things happened today to a seemingly trivial Highbrow poll on 34st.com. First, within a few hours there were over 1,000 votes for who is having the “Worst Week Ever,” curiously skewed for each of the three options besides MeepMe, the “flirting app” run by this guy. Then there were 33,000 votes and change, 11k each for, again, every other choice but MeepMe. To top it all off, the vast majority of said votes were from a random location in Stuart, Florida. Which, you know, seems to be where the MeepMe server is located.
Perhaps it goes without saying, but we think maybe you MeepMe folk could use your technical expertise for something better than hacking meaningless internet polls. Like making MeepMe not suck so much.
“Campus’ favorite” new phone-friendly PennApp — MeepMe — made its campus debut last Thursday night at Smoke’s. Reps for the app gave willing participants “MEEPID” numbers at the door, and from what we hear (or received screenshots of), Penn jumped at the chance to get its skeeze on. MeepMe cruised straight past an “interactive way to flirt” and on to a service resembling those late night just-for-local-singles hotlines.
The verdict: MeepMe is glorified anonymous sexting, tailor made for phone-happy and direct social interaction-inept dorks like us. And Penn guys are creepy. The combination has Smoke’s’ dance floor live-cams beat for the strangest (but also most hilarious) addition to late-night boozing on campus.
Want in on some of the action? The MeepMe crew will be setting up shop at Blarney tonight. For more of last Thursday’s MeepMe conversations, see after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
Last weekend at Weiss Tech House, the nerds from Dining Philosophers (Penn’s computer science club) showed us that computer programming can be COOL. With nothing but their brains (plus gadgets and gizmos aplenty), aspiring programmers spent the weekend competing in PennApps Mobile 2011, creating mobile apps relevant to Penn students. The winners walked away with some neat cash prizes, and today, after a week-long voting period, MeepMe has been selected for the Student Choice Award!
