Welcome back to the latest installment in the Freshman Guide To NSO 2010. In this episode, we’ll teach you how to buy books, ideally without shelling out for a brand-new one you’ll open once before finals.
Before we navigate the sea of texts, we’d like to issue one word of caution: DON’T BUY YOUR BOOKS YET! Don’t buy them until you’re certain you want to be in the class. It’s okay, no one else has bought them either. And you’re not going to do the first reading. It’s Rosh Hashanah!
The hands-down easiest way to find what you need is to just use Book.ly, which compares all your options for you across several different websites. They even have a custom version for Penn students! But if you want discounts, pros and cons, and other tips, click after the jump.

Over the weekend, I got a slightly disturbing text from my mom, asking “did u get your cap n gown.” While I thought a nonchalant “no” was enough, my phone blew up almost immediately.
Thanks to my semi-unconscious state, the only words I remember were a jumble, something along the lines of “deadline!…. bookstore…last week…your grandmother…” and maybe even something about ”walking down the aisle naked.” It was all a blur; I don’t really want to talk about it.
But if you found yourself in a similar conundrum to my own, never fear. After a quick call to Don at the bookstore, I quickly learned the following:
- caps and gowns are still available
- they’re a ridiculous $61.25 (but eco-friendly!)
- you buy them downstairs but then have to head upstairs to actually pick your goodies
Maybe next time the bookstore should publicize the whole limited time only offer a little better for those Seniors with better things to worry about.
If you answered yes, then do we have a job for you! The College Dean’s Advisory Board is holding a t-shirt design contest in conjunction with the Penn Bookstore to promote the College brand and give students more direct input into Bookstore operations. The winning design will be available for retail later in March, and will be featured in the front windows of the Bookstore. If that’s not incentive enough, the winner will receive a $100 Bookstore gift certificate and receives one of their shirts for free! (Yeah, we think that should be a given too).
Applicants can submit designs to casubmissions@penndab.org. Deadline is January 31st – only College students may apply.
We’ve been gushing all week on how cool the Penn Bookstore suddenly is. Take note: the coolness continues today.
We don’t usually note every reading at the bookstore, but dude is famous. Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, is stopping by from 7-8 p.m. He’ll be reading from his new book, Eating Animals, which is about, well, eating animals. We’re expecting the English major/vegetarian/vegan crowd to be in attendance.

I've seen the future, and I can't afford it.
The bookstore’s so crowded today that we almost thought a new Harry Potter book was being released. But alas, the gridlock is just a herd of ‘09ers looking to pick up their grad robes. It’s so surreal–write down your name, your height, your weight, check a little box and poof! a set of robes for the last day of your college life. And even though you’ll never wear them after that, they still cost over $60. Haha, suckers.

Reading in the Penn Bookstore.
