SPEC To Bring Zach Braff to Campus

zach-braff-thelongestkissDespite the wishes of TLC, SPEC is bringing Zach Braff to campus.

Braff, who is known for various quirky-and-sensitive-guy roles, will probably be less controversial than Malcolm Gladwell and more controversial than a baby rabbit. The actor has since branched into film production and also definitely some commercials. He’ll be speaking on March 25th at 7PM, and ticket details are here! But if you’re looking to net yourself a nice Jewish celebrity, you’ll have to forego your seder.

Live From Penn, It’s SPECurday Night!

It’s true, three of the cast members of Saturday Night Live will be on campus next month, and it’s going to be March Madness! First, on the 19th at Irvine, SPEC Connaissance is bringing longtime SNL star Jason Sudeikis, because Sudeikis is the natural follow up to Sanjay (we’re not complaining). Buy tickets for $5 here or on Locust for the discussion of Jason’s path to SNL superstardom and becoming Olivia Wilde’s fiancée and January Jones’ maybebabydaddy.

Then, on the 27th at the Penn Museum’s Harrison Auditorium (tickets here, $5 in advance), his hilarious costars, newcomer Kate McKinnon and Penn alum Vanessa Bayer, will host an evening of standup and improv comedy, along with someone named Nick Vatterott. While we wish Kristen Wiig would join her ex-colleagues, we’re still freakin’ excited. See the pretty cool sketch above, with Vanessa and Jason!

Update: Many Chalkings Get Us Talking

Update: Spotted all over campus this morning, various music stars and some cheeky messages to the “public.” We know SPEC said to keep an eye out today, but something seems a little fishy about this being so… obvious. Are they trying to clue us in, or play games with our heartz? Let UTB know  your thoughts in the comments!

It’s easy! Just have your mom’s psychic fill out this form.

Introducing: Flyer Of The Week

mac demarco flyer

Did we catch you by surprise? That’s right, all you student groups! Your flyers are now subject to critical review. It’s time to design to impress. This week’s winner is SPEC and Jazz & Grooves for their flyer about tonight’s concert at PiLam.  Look at those colors! Not to mention, it features half of this guy’s face! Pretty schnazzy, eh? Don’t be too sad, the competition will continue next week (looking at you, Mask and Wig. You have several more chances to win (maybe)). Want to impress us? We like humor and pretty colors.

Locust Flaikus: Edition 1

urlIntroducing “Locust Flaikus”, the horribly-named feature that brings both Locust flyers and haikus together as one. It’s creative, we know.

Your group matters to us, so if 1) you’re willing to bear the frigid cold and 2) you’re talented enough to get a flyer into the hands of one of our esteemed writers, you’ll get a haiku written about your event. Simple. Best flyer gets their own post. And here’s week 1:

Beautopious Men
Futuristic show
See it seventeen more times!
Funny, Mask and Wig.

For the Theater Nerds:
Laughter at Houston
Miniature TAC-E plays
This weekend only.

BREAKING: Susan Boyle, Nickelback To Headline Spring Fling 2K13

[Disclaimer: This post was part of our Joke Day series. Didn't the font tip you off?] Canadian power ballad babies Nickelback along with human with voice Susan Boyle are slated to appear at this year’s Spring Fling, says a SPEC source who we totally didn’t get drunk to force secrets from. The two superstar musical acts, who will be visiting campus in mid-April, will complete SPEC’s vision for this year’s Fling theme of “EFF U PENN,” a follow-up to last year’s popular “Once Upon a Fling” theme.

When reached for comment, Nickelback responded, “We totally don’t sound like an autotuned garbage disposal, guys. Why would you say that?” Susan Boyle, on the other hand, was all, “I’m, like, totally a good idea for Fling.” And there you have it, folks, another Spring Fling we can’t WAIT to get down and dirty for. Thanks, SPEC!

Winterfest from 12-2PM at Wynn Commons— "It's basically like a fall semester Fling!" said no one ever.
