The New College T-Shirt Doesn’t Totally Suck

Presenting the latest attempt at trying to brand The College as a “thing,” the winner of the Dean’s Advisory Board’s 2012 College Apparel Contest. Though nothing will ever top this design, it sure beats a lot of the other submissions that have come through. You can order one here. Click to see a close-up of the design:

People Who Went To Penn: Hannah August

When she’s not following FATJEW on Twitter (no, but really), Hannah August is the Press Secretary for the First Lady of the US of A, Michelle Lavaughn Robinson Obama.

Before her official coronation this past May, August did time as a press secretary for the Department of Justice and served as one of the Regional Communications Directors at the White House since 2010.

This 2005 College grad who majored in International Relations reminds us all that in these tough OCR times, it is in fact possible to apply your degree to a relevant field. But for everything else, there’s “summer analyst” at UBS.

All Fall 2012 College Classes That Double Count

Here is a list of anything and everything in the College you can double-count for a Foundational Approach and Sector requirement for next semester. We know, right?! A huge thanks goes out to the Penn STEP club for originally tweeting this, and the mysterious “Pavel” associated with PennApps who produced this report. Sorry about the formatting: the raw data can be found here.

Ridiculousness Behind The Scenes At The College Graduation

Some of our graduating pals sent over photo evidence of the highlights of tonight’s College of Arts and Sciences graduation. Enjoy.

The correct spelling would be “lose.” Thanks for helping us and our parents feel like the $200k was really worth it, Penn.

Absurdity ensues, after the jump.

Unfortunately This Was Not An April Fools Joke

Our inboxes were flooding this morning with news of this most hilarious listserv gaffe. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one this memorable.

It all started when a College of Arts and Crafts Sciences administrator sent out an email notifying College seniors that their “Commencement Announcements” were available for pick up. An unknowing senior responded, unaware that collegegrads@sas was in fact a listserv. Predictably, absurdity ensued. The best of it after the jump.

SAS To Turn Out The Lights

Get out your candlesticks, everyone, SAS is getting so totally blackout on Sunday. The School of Arts and Crafts Sciences has announced a “Scheduled Campus Power Outage” on Sunday, January 10 from midnight to noon. This maintenance fix will mean .sas email accounts will be down, as will sas.upenn.edu. Our advice? Sleep late. The email in full, after the jump.

Stick It Where?

IMG00138

Apologies for the picture quality, but this was just too good not to post. A tipster sent us this photo from the Wharton MBA lounge. First of all, we did not know these kinds of pencil sharpeners were still in existence. Secondly, exactly how necessary are these instructions? Whartonites may make bank, but College kids know how to sharpen a pencil. So at least we have that?

In West Philadelphia Born And Raised

Did you know that West Philadelphia was the first “streetcar suburb?” Or that the Lenape tribe once settled in the area? Worry not, apparently no one did.

According to a Penn press release, the history of West Philly is largely untold — something Penn students are trying to change. An academically-based community service class in the College has put together the West Philadelphia Community Center website, a virtual online history of the ‘hood. Call it more Penntrification of sorts, but the site is pretty legit. We feel that the Fresh Prince would approve.

College Grad Speaker Will Be John Legend-Adjacent

Ladies and gents of the College, we’ve got a student speaker for graduation.  Sarah-Jane Littleford is from Zimbabwe and majors in sunstainable development.  Girlfriend gets to sit next to John Legend, so understandably we’re jealous.

Freeloaderpalooza On The Green Today

College students just can’t seem to escape the reputation for loving free… well, anything. Time to prove them right. Today from 11-4 p.m., Collegepalooza ’09 will be taking place on College Green. The e-mail promises “food, fun, t-shirts, lectures and performances. From clay throwing with Fine Arts, to freeze dried ice cream provided by Chemistry, to a Samba ensemble performance representing the Music department.” You can’t get any more College than this.
