A Gap-tastic Holiday

We, much like those kids over at the New York Times, love Gap. We do. Creative director Patrick Robinson has breathed some much needed life into the classic American brand, and consumers are reaping the benefits in the form of smart threads and even smarter collaborations. And let’s face it, Gap knows what’s up when it comes to the holidays. This year they did themselves one better by unleashing a marketing campaign that will delight even the most jaded of grinches. In the grand tradition of mash-ups, Gap has created some unlikely pairings for their latest slew of ads. Napoleon Dynamite with one of the coolest-looking girls we’ve seen in a while! Dwight Schrute and that chick who made out with that other chick in Cruel Intentions! Check them all out here (or after the jump, though we spared you the Sandra Bernhard clip). This one may be our favorite (oh, hot damn!)…

The One Show You Must Watch This Week

Grey’s Anatomy, Thur. at 9 p.m. on ABC

It’s Brooke Smith’s (Erica Hahn) last episode since the network unceremoniously announced that she has unceremoniously been dropped off the show. While the party line is that her storyline — Hahn’s budding relationship with Callie Torres — just isn’t clicking, this news combined with the report that Grey’s newcomer Melissa George’s character has been downgraded from bisexual to singly sexual implies a different sort of reasoning on ABC’s part. At least this episode features Hahn prominently, as she’s working on the patient who lost his transplant heart to Denny when Izzie stole it a few years back. Jeffrey Dean Morgan makes yet another appearance because Seattle Grace is apparently populated with surgeons/ghost whisperers. Below, a sneak peek:

That’s What They Said: Penn Gets A Shout Out On ‘The Office’

Penn’s Ivy cousin Cornell gets namedropped left and right on The Office, but because this blog is called Under The Button (as opposed to “Inside The Gorge” or something Ithaca-y like that), it doesn’t usually warrant a post.  On Thursday night’s episode, however, Penn finally got a mention!  And it wasn’t a lame joke at Penn’s expense, as many Penn pop cultural references tend to be, so double hooray!

So here’s the backstory:  Andy (Ed Helms) and Dwight (Rainn Wilson) are bitter rivals: both of them really want to be the boss’s pet and they also share a bizarre ardor for Angela, the uptight accountant.  Andy’s main bragging right is the fact that he went to Cornell, which he mentions as frequently as possible.  One day a fed-up Dwight comes into the office clad in a Cornell sweatshirt–Andy is pissed that Dwight’s mocking the “sacred colors,” but Dwight says it’s ok, because he’s actually applying to Cornell.  Later in the break room, Dwight asks a fuming Andy, “So, how do you think we’re gonna do against Penn this year?”  We loved that Penn got mentioned, and we especially loved how well-placed it was–as a Scrantonite, Dwight would definitely be familiar with Penn, the closest Ivy.

Check out the scene, which comes about six minutes into the episode:

Edit:  Ahem.  A pedantic reader writes in to set the record straight: “actually, cornell is the closet ivy to scranton. followed by princeton. columbia and penn are exactly tied for third place at 126 miles from scranton. check it on google maps.”
