South Street Bridge Reopening In November

south-street-bridge

After two years of construction on the South Street Bridge, it will no longer take 45 minutes to get downtown come November 6! Yes, the South Street Bridge is reopening! The bridge allows cars to drive from right by the Penn Museum/HUP, across the river, and to 27th and South Street.

Yes, dear freshmen and sophomores, there was once a time at the University of Pennsylvania when there was a magical bridge that transported automobiles from West Philadelphia to...South Philly. But then, in December 2008, they closed the bridge for two years. What does this mean for you? It means that instead of going all the way over to Walnut or Chestnut or Market to get to say, a South Philly BYO, or Pat's and Geno's, or basically anything south of Rittenhouse Square - you can now take the South Street Bridge, which will take approximately half the time. It means you are about to save a heck of a lot on your weekend cab fare. Rejoice!

Somewhat impressively, the project actually kept on schedule. Just under two years ago, when UTB was still a newborn, we wrote about the annoyingness of the closed bridge.

Also, it's going to be pretty and there will be bike lanes and LED lamp contraptions and joy all around. November 6 cannot come soon enough.
