Students Pick MeepMe As Favorite PennApp

Last weekend at Weiss Tech House, the nerds from Dining Philosophers (Penn's computer science club) showed us that computer programming can be COOL. With nothing but their brains (plus gadgets and gizmos aplenty), aspiring programmers spent the weekend competing in PennApps Mobile 2011, creating mobile apps relevant to Penn students. The winners walked away with some neat cash prizes, and today, after a week-long voting period, MeepMe has been selected for the Student Choice Award!

Check out our take on MeepMe and some of the other PennApps after the jump.

MeepMe: This is an app for anonymous flirting in a bar setting. Basically, everyone with the app is assigned a number to put on their back, and you can send secret admirer texts to that number, revealing your identity only if you end up hitting it off. It doesn't seem all that anonymous to us, though, because all you really have to do is look for the person with a giant number on their back who isn't talking to anyone face-to-face.

DJFeed: When you go to a party with a DJ (as we exclusively do), this app allows you to send in your feedback on the song choices being made, and put in requests electronically. So you can ask for Mambo #5 as many times as you want without getting banned from the DJ station.

Biblioteka: This app helps you find the books you need in Van Pelt or around campus. Because navigating the library is like, so confusing. Can this thing take me to the Sparknotes section or what?

Party Crasher: It seems like this app is just for Drexel kids who want to come to Penn parties.

Tagtanium: You know how sometimes you just want to play hide-and-seek in a long-term, long-distance way? This app solves that problem. It's like Foursquare, but with catching people.
