NSO 2011: New (Sexual) Orientation

Prefrosh, don’t be alarmed. Penn ‘15’s NSO will not witness any drastic changes (that we know of). We’re talking about “Orientation,” the product of Paul Messaris’ COMM362: Visual Communication Lab.  Over the course of this semester, students in the class wrote, acted in, filmed, and edited this short project about an ancient rock that changes people’s sexual orientations. Intrigued (or confused) yet?

While enrolled in the Anthropology of Sexuality, five students come into possession of said sexually-charged stone. Then they all wield automatic weapons to face off against the killer monk trying to retrieve the rock. A lot of other stuff, philosophical musings, and sex jokes happen along the way, but we don’t want to totally spoil it for you.

The entire thing is about as bizarre as it sounds, but props to these kids for producing an original (definitely original…) and engaging movie that’s actually pretty funny. Not to mention, it’s totally relatable: who among us hasn’t cabbed it to museum because our heels were just killing us after walking all the way from Beige to Gia and there was just no. way. we were going to suffer all the way to 33^rd just for Criminology recitation. Or maybe that was just me. Regardless, this class seems like an awesome venture for all the future Academy Award winners out there and it certainly helps make up for some past Penn filmmaking duds.
