The 5 Best Trash Cans For Squirrels To Eat Out Of Before Winter

Winter is coming. And at a University where the squirrels probably outnumber the students, that means lots of plumping up for the long, hibernative haul. But just like us, squirrels want the best for themselves – which is why we've put together this little guide for our little friends. Pass this post along to the squirrels you see most often (lookin' at you, Sparky) to help them prep for the winter. You know they'd do the same for you.

#5 Wynn Commons

These are some of the most high-throughput trash cans on campus. And being right outside of Houston Market, they receive tasty scraps on a regular basis. Considered along with decent tree cover, you've got a pretty well-rounded nibble spot.

#4 High Rise Walk

One of the main residential hubs of campus, the High Rise triangle attracts a good blend of edible trash. Squirrels are always poking in and out of these cans – and when a human gets too close, a safe tree is never too far away.

#3 Hayden Hall

Sort of an unknown, hole-in-the-wall trash can out in the middle of nowhere (Engineering Quad) that not many squirrels really know about. But this place is  prime. Humans are always depositing their uneaten food truck scraps into these cans after rough mornings in DRL. That's where one happy customer, pictured above, got some pita.

#2 Hill

A squirrel's dream. This trash cans combines the best of both worlds: proximity to a dining hall and easy accessibility. Unfortunately, it's held back from the #1 slot by its lack of air conditioning.

#1 Engineering Quad

Penn hottest trash can is in front of Towne. Located on top of a steam vent, this place has everything: gourmet scraps, dense tree cover, and relative isolation from pesky humans. The steam that rises from underneath not only keeps the food inside nice and toasty, but it also provides a place for squirrels to warm up. Perfect for pre-hibernation.
